How I ended up in Zambia
My name is April Sylvester. I live in Zambia full time as a youth development mentor.
I was 14 years old when I knew I would be living in Africa one day. All it took was a story from my 8th grade math teacher and a few pictures and I just knew. In the 11 years since, I have gone on 5 separate trips to 4 different countries in sub-Saharan Africa for longer and longer periods of time. I just cannot seem to get enough. I believe that there are specific places in the world for everyone where they feel settled in their being, that even when they are busy they feel calm and at peace. Africa is that place for me.
I realized that GLO was the specific place for me when I was visiting in 2013. I happened to be cooking lasagna with the director David Lukama and as the noodles boiled and we accidentally added cayenne pepper instead of paprika (to our taste buds’ demise), the Spirit told me: this is the place where you can combine your passion for Africa with your love for youth development. Almost 3 years and lots of learning later, it has finally coming to fruition.
