|Looking at what God did last year
This guy with the cheeky smile is named Maffa. And boy do I adore him. But when he first walked onto campus last year, all I saw was a gangly teenager.
At the beginning of the year, he sat quietly in class and was well behaved. But one day someone turned music on and that was when the switch flipped. He was out in the middle of the room moving his hips here and his arms there. Everyone was surprised. He was really good!
After that, he really opened up. Whenever I was walking around GLO I would hear “Apu!” and know he was around.
Maffa is energetic and fun, loud once you get to know him, and also very kind. One of the kindest people I know in fact. One day as we sat around the charcoal cooking dinner, Maffa told me that he had a younger brother with a physical handicap. He cannot speak or walk but they are best friends.
Throughout the whole six months, Maffa opened up to me about girl problems, nightmares, school, and family issues. And it was such a privilege to be able to listen and speak love into his life. Through gap year he grew into a strong leader. When we needed to choose someone to lead the group in something, he would always be at the top of the list. Through this, he realized that one of his gifts is influencing people and he started to learn how to do that for the glory of God. I cannot wait to see where life takes him!
